F420/F520 Topics in Performance Study

Communication in performance.

1-2 credits.  11:15-1:10 T MC040.  Instructor:  Professor Kay Kim (post-doc faculty in collaborative piano, woodwinds)

Open to undergraduate, graduate, and diploma students in woodwind, brass, piano, and strings.  Examples drawn primarily from the woodwind repertoire.
Communication in Performance is a course in duo playing for woodwind, brass, and string soloists with piano. The artistic objective of this class is to cultivate individual independence in music-making as ensemble players by learning how to analyze one’s critical listening process and how to communicate with one’s peers and the audience both musically and verbally. The class will meet as a whole for performances and seminars (no more than two hours a week) and for individual duo coachings which will result in public performance. The topics for class discussion seminars will include several practical means of musical communication (e.g. rhythm, tone, texture, phrasing, form) and also ways to accomplish some of the extra-musical tasks that are involved in promoting oneself. Students taking the course for 2 credits will be expected to submit an additional writing assignment with a related topic of his/her choice approved by proposal.
