Choral Conducting

The Department of Choral Conducting offers instruction in conducting at all levels from undergraduate beginners to doctoral candidates. Students in the graduate degree programs study masterworks from various periods with a focus on the technical, aural, and analytical skills required in conducting. The curriculum also emphasizes linguistic awareness and stylistic studies. Students in choral conducting become skilled in the orchestral and instrumental repertoires, as well as in choral ensemble conducting. Graduate students in choral conducting benefit from the guidance of a choral mentor-a master teacher who advises graduate conductors in their academic programs and performance preparation in collaboration with other members of the faculty. Graduates of IU's master's and doctoral programs in choral conducting hold key teaching and conducting positions throughout the United States and in numerous foreign countries.
