Costume Construction Technology

Costume Construction Technology is a joint degree program offered by the School of Music and the Department of Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design (AMID) in the College of Arts and Sciences. Students take course work in basic couture sewing, pattern drafting, dressmaking, and tailoring, in addition to gaining practical experience in costume construction described below. Students can earn the Associate of Science degree from the School of Music, in addition to the Bachelor of Science in Apparel Merchandising or other major of their choice. Recent graduates of the program have worked as staff members or interns with the Santa Fe Opera, the Central City Opera, and the TDF Costume Collection. Others go on to work in the apparel industry.

Practical Experience

All students meet a four-semester ensemble requirement that provides hands-on experience working in either the Elizabeth Sage Costume Collection or as wardrobe personnel for the IU Opera and Ballet Theaters. In addition, students are encouraged to participate in internships or other positions with summer theatres across the United States.
