Areas of StudyEarly MusicThe Department of Early Music offers undergraduate and graduate degrees focusing on the historical performance of early instruments (before 1800), complemented by theoretical studies and research related to early music. The Early Music Institute (EMI), which is affiliated with the department, sponsors a series of publications, recordings, and conferences devoted to early music. Students come to the department from around the world to study early instruments or voice with our internationally known faculty. As part of a major university, the department and EMI also draw on the resources of other academic departments, including musicology, literature, medieval studies, languages, and fine arts. Students take private lessons in voice or on historical instruments, including Baroque bassoon, flute, oboe, viola, and violin; lute; theorbo; harpsichord; fortepiano; natural horn; recorder; and viola da gamba. They also participate each semester in ensembles sponsored by the department (see list below). A wide range of course work includes Literature and Performance Practices of Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque and Classical Music, as well as Research in Early Music.
