Music in General Studies

Each semester hundreds of students from across the Bloomington campus enroll in music courses offered through the Department of Music in General Studies. The department is committed to making music accessible to all students at IU, and no musical background or training is required. Regular course offerings include a series of classes on the history of Rock and Roll, Music for the Listener, Introduction to Music theory, Jazz for Listeners, and numerous courses in popular music such as The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Frank Zappa. The faculty for this department includes awarding-winning teachers, composers, performers, and authors. Non-music majors can take lessons in any instrument or voice without previous musical training.
