Stage Direction for Opera

A select number of students are pursuing the master's degree program in stage direction for opera. For admission to the program, students with a bachelor's degree, preferably with a major in theater or music, have an entrance interview in which they need to demonstrate musicality and dramatic and visual creativity. Prospective students should have a working knowledge of German, Italian, and French. It is possible to fulfill the language requirement through additional study while in the degree program. The two-year program includes course work in opera literature, opera history, and stage direction, as well as an opera workshop that provides hands-on experience. At the end of the program, students do a thesis project, which usually consists of mounting a one-act opera.

Graduates with a master's degree in stage direction for opera usually work as professional stage managers or directors or in academic positions teaching stage direction or in opera programs. Alumni of the program have held positions at the Metropolitan Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, Santa Fe Opera, and Houston Opera, among others.
