Areas of StudyOrganThe Department of Organ has a long and distinguished history in educating students in organ performance, church music, organ literature, and organ pedagogy. There are approximately 35 organ majors in the department's degree programs, which range from the bachelor's degree to the doctorate. Students receive a comprehensive education in applied organ instruction and church music. Bachelor's degree students, for example, study the standard organ repertoire, including German/French baroque, nineteenth-century German/French Romantic, and twentieth-century organ music. In addition, undergraduate students are expected to learn specific works such as the Widor "Toccata" from Symphony V and Bach's "Toccata and Fugue" in d-minor. IU graduates with degrees in organ hold a wide range of positions, including church organists and directors of music, as well as college and university teaching appointments.
