PERCUSSION

Assistant Professor, Tenure-Track

Appointment Effective Beginning August 2008

The Jacobs School of Music Department of Percussion seeks candidates for a junior faculty position. Preference will be given to applicants with an emerging national/international reputation and demonstrated ability in the area of world percussion. Areas of specialization may include African, Brazilian, Indian, Afro–Cuban hand drumming, and steel drums. Regardless of the area of specialization, expertise and versatility in teaching all aspects of general percussion will be expected. The successful candidate will be able to attract highly talented students, and will be able to prepare them for careers as percussionists in a wide variety of settings.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Studio instruction of undergraduate and graduate percussion students. Teach a variety of world percussion courses, which may include West African drumming, Indian drumming, and Brazilian percussion concepts. Coordinate world percussion activities in the department. Participation in school-wide committees and departmental hearings, auditions, recruitment, master classes, and other activities is expected.
QUALIFICATIONS
Emerging national/international reputation and demonstrated ability as a performer and teacher, able to attract highly talented students. Significant experience in world percussion as well as orchestral performance, with comprehensive knowledge of orchestral, chamber, solo, world and contemporary multi-percussion literature. Master’s degree required, doctorate preferred; comparable professional experience will be given equal consideration.
SALARY AND RANK
Assistant professor, tenure-track; salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
