The procedures outlined here apply to students who are currently pursuing a Master or Arts in Musicology at the Jacobs School of Music and who would now like to apply for admission to the PhD program.

Step 1: Complete the Indiana University Graduate Application

Complete the online IU Application for Graduate and Professional Students HERE. An application fee will normally be assessed for the application, however, as you have paid the fee in the past, be sure to request a fee waiver as you reach the last step of the application.

Step 2: Complete the Jacobs School of Music Graduate Application

Complete the online IU Jacobs School of Music application for admission (you will
receive a link to this in a confirmation email that will come shortly after you
complete the IU application). All applicants to the Jacobs School of Music must
have their applications complete and received by the Jacobs School of Music
Office of Admissions by December 1, 2015 in order to be considered for Fall
2016 admission.

Step 3: Letters of Recommendation

Arrange for three letters of recommendation to be submitted online via the Jacobs School of Music Graduate Application.

Step 4: Submit Pre-screening materials
  • Official Transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
  • Official TOEFL or ELTS Report.The minimum TOEFL result for the doctoral degree program is a paper-based score of 600, a computer-based minimum of 250, and an internet-based minimum of 100.
  • GRE Scores Report
  • a formal research paper or thesis on an analytical or historical subject
  • all 3 letters of recommendation must also be on file (step 3) for pre-screening review to be completed.

NOTE: The pre-screening materials (with the exception of the letters of recommendation), must be submitted online via DecisionDesk

Step 5:

If passing the pre-screening review, you will be invited to attend an in-person interview day on either January 15 or February 5, 2015.
