Audition InformationAd Hoc Auditions and Recorded Auditions Ad Hoc Auditions and Recorded AuditionsIf you are unable to attend one of the official audition dates sponsored by the Office of Music Admissions, but wish to have an audition in person, it may be possible to arrange an ad hoc audition. To schedule an ad hoc audition, you must contact the chair of the department for which you wish to audition. For a listing of faculty telephone numbers and e-mail addresses, contact the Office of Music Admissions or see the online personnel directory. Once the department chair has granted the ad hoc audition, submit the audition application and indicate the ad hoc audition date and the name of the person who granted it. Note that faculty members are not obligated to grant ad hoc auditions. Students are strongly encouraged to schedule ad hoc auditions to be held after the March audition weekend. Recorded auditions are acceptable; however, faculty prefer that students come to the Jacobs School of Music for on-campus auditions. It is important to note that in some areas of study, screening auditions are required in order to be invited to campus for a full audition. Please indicate on the audition application if the recording you have provided is your final audition recording. Recordings will be reviewed when all application materials have been recieved. Audition recordings become the property of Indiana University and are not returned. The repertoire on the recording must conform to the audition requirements of an on-campus audition. Please see the audition requirements by instrument and degree. Recordings should be of high quality and compatible in either video (NTSC) or audio (not DAT) form. All recordings or compact discs should be clearly labeled with your name, repertoire, instrument, and degree sought (B.M. or B.M.E., etc.). Your audition recording must be sent to the Office of Music Admissions, not to individual faculty members or to other admission offices (international or university). We are not responsible for recordings or other application materials sent elsewhere. Admission DecisionsAfter your completed application and all required materials have been received by the Office of Music Admission and Financial Aid and by the IU Office of Admissions or International Admissions, an admission decision will be made. An official admission decision letter will be sent to you by mail. Please be sure to keep your mailing address current with all admissions offices. Teacher AssignmentsThe IU Jacobs School of Music audition application gives you the opportunity to express your preference for individual teachers. We will attempt to honor your request based on studio availability and the wishes of individual teachers. If you are offered admission to the Jacobs School of Music, you should contact the teacher with whom you would like to study immediately after you have received your decision letter. For a listing of telephone numbers, you may contact the Office of Music Admission and Financial Aid or see the personnel directory. Visiting StudentsStudents who have matriculated at other institutions or individuals who wish to attend the IU Jacobs School of Music as a visiting student during the Fall or Spring semesters must complete the application process. In addition, visiting students should contact the teacher with whom they would like to study or the chair of the appropriate department. You must arrange for a faculty member to support your application. If you are applying for performance study, you must also have a faculty member agree to accept you into their studio. That faculty member must submit an e-mail or letter to the Office of Music Admissions (musicadm@indiana.edu) stating that he or she agrees to take you into their studio as a visiting student. This must be submitted before any admission decision can be made.
