Student Life

At the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, you'll study with students from throughout the United States and around the world who have come to Bloomington to pursue an education in music. The city offers a cosmopolitan atmosphere set in the rolling hills of Southern Indiana. A New York Times writer recently called Bloomington "as diverse as any large American city" and "a cultural and recreational center."

At Indiana University, you'll find yourself immersed in music of all kinds. With more than 1,100 performances annually, you can choose from numerous musical events each evening of the semester. And because of the comprehensive nature of the school's programs, you can expand your musical horizons, checking out Latin American music, new music, early music, jazz, and other genres.

Faculty and students enjoy close interaction, and students within studios develop a camaraderie. Students frequently get together informally to practice and play music, and they attend each other's performances. Composition students find talented and willing performers for their new works.

Beyond the IU Jacobs School of Music, you'll find a lively arts scene throughout the campus and the Bloomington community, including theater, visual arts, and local musicians performing in area venues. Bloomington is known for its quality of life, with good public schools, excellent recreational opportunities nearby (including state parks and forests and a large lake), and a broad range of international restaurants, cafés, and coffee shops.
