The Avery Fisher Prize and Career Grant are among the most prestigious awards in classical music. Eleven awards winners have studied at the Jacobs School of Music and two winners are currently on the school's faculty--a pedigree unsurpassed.

A Grammy Winner!

Internationally acclaimed concert pianist and alumna Angelin Chang, won this year's Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Soloist Performance with Orchestra for her piano solo performance of Olivier Messiaen's Oiseaux Exotiques (Exotic Birds) with the Cleveland Chamber Symphony, conducted by John McLaughlin Williams, who also won the Grammy. With multiple talents as a composer, pianist and theorist, the very gifted alumni Martin Kennedy continues to develop a spectacular career. A professor of theory and composition at Washington University in St. Louis, he was recently profiled in a preview of an upcoming concert featuring his chamber works, many of which were composed while he studied at the IU Jacobs School of Music.

Sara Caswell CD Release  |
Bloomington native Sara Caswell, a Wells Scholar and graduate of Indiana University's School of Music with a BM'00 in violin performance and jazz studies and an Artist Diploma'02 in violin performance, is now living in New York City beginning her second year of study toward a master's degree in Jazz Violin at the Manhattan School of Music. Kathleen Tran Awarded

Indiana University alumna Kathleen Tran, who in 2002 became the 14th IU student and second woman from IU to be named a Rhodes Scholar, has been named as one of 30 winners of the 2005 Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans.

Twenty-three-year-old DaXun Zhang, may not play baseball, but he sure can play the double bass. This IU School of Music student of Lawrence Hurst is fresh from a triumphant recital at the Terrrace Theater in Washington, D.C., March 22, and is the first bassist to be so featured in the Washington Performing Arts Society’s Kreeger String Series at the Kennedy Center. Opera Exellence

Congratulations to Jordan Bisch who is now a proud IU Alumnus and student of Timothy Noble. Jordanis one of four grand-prize winners from the March 20 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Selected from more than 1,500 competitors, Bisch was one of nine finalists surviving district-level competitions, regional auditions, and the national semifinals in New York City.

Violinist Tai Murray received her Artist Diploma in Performance from IU in May 2000 and, soon after, was hailed by Ebony magazine as “one of the new child prodigies." Dreams Come True

Cary Boyce, a composer and co-artistic director of the Aguavá New Music Studio production company, decided to keep his base in Bloomington after graduating with a doctorate in composition from the IU School of Music. A growing figure on the local and national music scene, he has been featured on nationally syndicated broadcasts such as Center Stage from Wolftrap, Cathedral Classics with the Dale Warland Singers, and WFIU’s Harmonia.
