Mihaela Bogdan, Stage Director Scott Voyles, Conductor Dedicated to our beloved Robert Samels, member of our cast, and to the lives of our colleagues Georgina, Zach, Chris and Garth. Presented by students in the IU Department of Opera Studies, "Transformations" is an adult re-telling of several fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm, with a libretto by Pulitzer Prize-nominee Anne Sexton. The opera incorporates varied musical and singing styles (including Bing Crosby, Lena Horne, W.C. Fields, the Andrews Sisters, and Ethel Merman), and dance forms such as the conga, samba, fox-trot, and habańera. The work uses a small orchestra, a great deal of declamation, jazz- and blues-influenced melody, and quotations from music of the past, notably, an allusion to Mahler's Symphony No. 4 and Puccini's "Turandot." Free and open to the public. |
