Valse Fantasie was first choreographed by George Balanchine in 1953 and then returned to the same piece of music in 1967. The first features one of Balanchine’s favorite refrains, a solitary male who has not one, but several women to choose from. The second version is for one man and five women.
It is interesting to note Balanchine’s use of movement motifs spun intricately with variations upon them.
The second version is most commonly performed today by companies around the world. IU Ballet Theater is honored to present both versions of this ballet in succession for the audience to see both the evolution and contrast of choreographic mastery by the legendary George Balanchine.
The performance of Valse Fantasie, a Balanchine® Ballet, is presented by arrangement with The George Balanchine Trust and has been produced in accordance with the Balanchine Style® and Balanchine Technique® Service standards established and provided by the Trust.
