Welcome to the Indiana University School of Music Department of Recording Arts. Established
in 1982, the Department of Recording Arts now offers two degrees in Recording Arts:
a Bachelor of Science, and an Associate of Science. These degrees are
intended for the student who wishes to pursue a career in music recording,
audio post-production for CD, DVD, television and film, and live sound.
Our program emphasizes hands-on production experience from the very first semester of enrollment. All courses include a significant lab component,
students must complete weekly lab assignments ranging from basic analog production, to surround sound, to DVD authoring. During their junior and senior
years, audio students complete individual projects in the multitrack studio, and serve as producers and engineers on university-sponsored CD
projects.
In addition to their coursework, audio students record and provide sound reinforcement for school of music concerts, in total, approximately 500
events per year. These range from orchestra and opera to big band jazz, to chamber music. All told, audio students will have in excess of 200 hours of
individual project time in our studios as well as over 600 hours of practical production experience upon graduation.
