Library of 2008 Marching Hundred E-mails

Below you will find a library of e-mails sent to rookie and veteran members of the 2008 Indiana University Marching Hundred.

If you registered late for the group, or perhaps missed one of our earlier e-mails, you may scroll down to receive any information you may have missed.

Entries are organized by most recent e-mails at the top. You can check the date of each e-mail in the header.

Marching Hundred update - 8/5/08

Later today, I will be e-mailing music from our first halftime show (music of Bon Jovi) to all rookie members of the Hundred (vets will receive music later this week).

The two songs are in .pdf format - you should be able to print them out - they can be expanded to a larger size (they will come out in flip folder size).

In addition to the music, you can visit this website:

http://www.music.indiana.edu/department/band/show1.2008.shtml

and HEAR the midi file of these two arrangements. You can follow along with your part as the midi plays. Even better - get really brave, crank up the volume on your computer, and play along!!

Note: All rookie trombone and trumpet players start with 2nd or 3rd part - you will be "auditioning" for other parts during camp week. We request you learn the parts sent to you, knowing you'll have the opportunity to change parts at a later date.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me!

Marching Hundred update - 7/28/08

1) Many of you have asked about marching shoes for Hundred this fall.

All wind and percussion members need to supply their own shoes for the season. They should be:

a) All black - no white (or other colors) trim or designs
b) Should be leather if possible (last longer and more comfortable)
c) Should have a small heel (our spats have elastic bands that go
under the shoe - if there is no heel, the elastic will tear apart

If you wore black shoes in high school band, and they still fit, they will probably work OK for us. We do NOT sell shoes at IU, so this is one item you should have before you come to camp.

2) I have the following people signed up to play in the State Fair pep band on August 7 - please check for accuracy and let me know if there are corrections to be made:

Carley Sullivan, piccolo
Anna McLeaster, piccolo
Kodi Melson, piccolo
Ericka Thomas, piccolo

Jayme Kasting, clarinet
Leslie Eadens, clarinet
Jessica Zmierski, clarinet

Laura Clemenson, alto sax
Andrew Meyer, alto sax
Alli Buchholz, alto sax
Jill Gingery, alto sax

Ashley Nichols, tenor sax

Cam Bryan, horn
Ashley Ordner, horn
Courtney Grayson, horn
Cassey Crowell, horn

Kaitlin Disher, trumpet
Max Jacobs, trumpet
Kaylind Holmes, trumpet
Ryan Berner, trumpet
Derek Finley, trumpet
Callan Fromm, trumpet

Max Sherrill, trombone
Charles Corbin, trombone
Daniel Corbin, trombone
Alex Davidson, trombone

Graham Keith, sousy
Jamal Miller, sousy
Mike Halsey, sousy
Nate Delong, sousy

Brandon Le, drumset

FINAL DETAILS ON THE STATE FAIR PEP RALLY BAND will be sent later this week.

Marching Hundred update - 7/22/08

Greetings from Bloomington! Here is your next installment of news for the IU Marching Hundred - please read everything CAREFULLY!

1) Many of you have asked how you can volunteer for the DCI World Championships, to be held here in Bloomington on August 7-9. You can visit this site:

https://2008dci.theregistrationsystem.com/en/registration/index/316

and click on the "register now" button to sign up for the event. Restrictions apply, so read that page carefully before you sign up.

2) During Band Camp week, Freshmen are welcome to attend any events they feel are important. The Freshmen Induction Ceremony is held two times - if you want to attend, please choose the 5:00 p.m. event - that way, you will not miss much of our band camp activities. When in doubt, ask upperclassmen which events they feel are the most important to attend.

3) For those of you who are NON-music majors, you should register for X050 (Marching Hundred for non-music majors) in the School of Music. If you are an accepted music major, you register for X040 (instrumental ensembles) in the School of Music. Many of you have done this already, and we appreciate it. You can still modify your schedule through the 1st week of classes.

4) We are pleased to announce former snare drummer from the Hundred, David Neville, has qualified for the 2008 Olympics in the 400 meter dash!! David marched for two seasons with the Hundred, and has many IU and Big Ten track records to his credit. David was selected as one of three US runners in that event. Needless to say, we feel David is the "fastest snare drummer on earth"!!

5) For the vets, we wanted to give you an update on last year's A.I.'s and what they are doing this fall:

Pam returns for her 2nd year with the Hundred
Richard has accepted a position as Interim Associate Director of Bands at Austin Peay State University - let's go Peay
Polly has accpeted a position as a PhD student at the University of Illinois and will be working with the Marching Ililini
Matt has accepted the position of Associate Director of Bands at Temple University in Philly
Sarah has accepted the position of Instrumental Music Director at Athens (Ohio) High School

We are very proud of these great students/teachers, and wish them well on their new (and returning) positions!

6) We will automatically register all rookies for early admittance into the dorms -

Percussion on Friday, August 22
Rookie Winds on Sunday, August 24
Prospective RedSteppers on Tuesday, August 26

If you are a VET member of the Hundred, you can check into your dorm on Tuesday, August 26. We are unable to allow any vets to check in prior to that time. You'll need to contact RPS to gain early entrance before the 26th.

7) A list of State Fair band members will be sent out later this week.

8) If you are a percussionist, please keep daily tabs on the IU Drumline website:

iudrumline.com

You'll find all of the info you'll need for Camp at that site. If you have any questions, you can contact Joel Brainard, percussion instructor:

jbrainar@indiana.edu

9) The only fee you need to pay for Hundred is a one-time, $30.00 uniform fee. That fee (payable in cash or check only) will be taken as you get your uniform this year.

10) Near the beginning of August, you will all be sent music to our first halftime show!! Since that first show happens so quickly this year, we want to get a head start on the music. Watch your e-mail in August for a link where you will be able to download your part for our Bon Jovi Show!!

That's it for now - please let me know if you have any questions!!

Summer letter for vets and rookies - sent June 26:

Summer 2008

To: Marching Hundred Vets
Marching Hundred Rookies

From: Dave Woodley, Director of Athletic Bands
Paul Popiel, Associate Director of Athletic Bands

Re: An Incredible Season Awaits!!

Many of us cannot live life to the fullest until we have received notification that yet another season of the Marching Hundred is nearing! Dr. P and I have been hard at work preparing what will be one of the most productive (and busy) seasons we had with the Hundred in some time. Please take a few minutes to read this note and do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions:

PERFORMANCES: This season will officially qualify as a butt-load of performances for the Hundred. 8 home football games, the indoor Showcase concert, and 2 (that is right, 2!) NFL games will headline our season. The Indianapolis Colts have asked the Hundred to open up Lucas Oil Stadium by performing at the first game on Sunday night, October 7. In addition to the Colts, the Hundred will also be performing for the Chicago Bears in Chicago on October 19! Our road trip is to Illinois on October 18 and we will also hold our annual Showcase concert sometime in November.

We will be featuring music this fall by Bon Jovi, animated cartoon and movie themes AND a special Guitar Hero show in November!! Keep watching our website (www.marchinghundred.org) for the latest show music lists.

STAFF: Many of our outstanding staff return this season. We welcome back Janis Parker (RedSteppers), Joel Brainard (Percussion) and Pam Holt (low brass) to the Hundred. In addition to those great staff members, we add four new faces to the Hundred: Matt Holzner (low brass), Ross Wilkerson (trumpet Ð not a new face, but who knows if the facial hair will be there or not . . .) Kyle Glaser (pic and clarinet) and Scott Jones (sax and horn). Matt will be working on his MM in Wind Conducting, Scott and Kyle will be here for their DM in Wind Conducting degrees, and Ross has agreed to step from the ranks of the Hundred into a spot as a Grad staff member. We welcome these new folks to the Hundred.

THE HUNDRED: As of June 25, 2008, we are happy to report the following numbers in the following sections:

26 piccolo Ð 29 clarinet Ð 20 alto sax Ð 9 tenor sax Ð 44 trumpet Ð 21 horn Ð 24 trombones Ð 8 baritones Ð 18 sousies

KEEP RECRUITING WITH US! We still expect about 20 more rookies to join us, so we are well on our way to our goal of 100 new Hundred members!

BAND CAMP: Because our first football game is at the end of Band Camp this year, we will be learning pre-game AND half-time drill at the end of Band Camp. Here are the official move in dates for Band Camp:

*Friday, August 22 UnderGrad staff, ALL PERCUSSION
(Note Ð no one is allowed to move into the dorms on Saturday, August 23, so all UGS and Percussion who live in the dorms must move in on Friday the 22nd OR Sunday the 24th)
*Sunday, August 24 ALL ROOKIE WIND PLAYERS
*Tuesday, August 26 RedSteppers, ALL HUNDRED VETS

We have once again worked out an agreement with the Halls of Residence to allow veteran members of the Hundred to check into the Halls according to the dates listed above (normal contracts begin Wednesday, August 27). Due to a restricted budget, we are no longer able to pay for vets to enter the Halls prior to the above dates.

IN ORDER FOR US TO RESERVE YOUR ROOM, WE MUST HEAR BACK FROM YOU (vets only Ð we already have ALL rookies on the list!) BY AUGUST 4, 2008. YOU CAN E-MAIL US AT hundred@indiana.edu OR CALL US AT 812-855-1372 TO RESERVE YOUR EARLY CHECK IN. EARLY CHECK-IN MUST BE COORDINATED THROUGH THE DEPARTMENT OF BANDS, NOT THE HALLS OF RESIDENCE.

UNDERGRAD STAFF: The following upperclassmen have been chosen (by peer vote and recommendations from 2007 staff) to serve on the UnderGrad Staff for the 2008 season. We invite rookies (and vets too) to contact any of their UGS via e-mail if you have any questions about Band Camp 08 or the upcoming season:

As we mentioned earlier, you may move into your dorm room early as long as you contact us by August 4, 2008.

Should you have ANY questions regarding BAND CAMP 08, or the Hundred in general, please do not hesitate to contact us: 812-855-1372 (phone), 812-856-4207 (fax), hundred@indiana.edu (e-mail). We will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

State Fair Band Update - sent Friday, June 20:

I learned yesterday we will NOT be participating in the State Fair Parade portion of the IU Days at the State Fair . . . I know you are very sad about this (just as Dr. P and I are) - we are still participating in the pep rally on August 7. You will still be paid $20.00 and will receive a free IU t-shirt. We'll be leaving B'town around 1 or 1:30 on the 7th and should now return around 6 p.m.

We still have room for band members to come and play with us that day - we are in desperate need of percussion, trombone and trumpet. We will, of course, accept any wind and percussion players from Hundred.

If you are interested in participating, and you have not yet replied, please reply to this message with your name and instrument. Final details will be sent out in mid-late July.
