This note will serve as your final summer update. As always, please e-mail me with any questions you may have. 1) Everyone (with the exception of sousies, piccolos, and percussion) needs to have a lyre for your instrument. We suggest purchasing one of these before you get to Bloomington. ProWinds, a local music store, may not have the kind you need. You can call them at 812-333-2095 if you want to check before your arrival. 2) EVERYONE must bring with them to camp, a completed HEALTH FORM: http://www.indiana.edu/~bands/healthform.pdf Print it out, fill it out, and bring with you to camp. 3) Every student in the Hundred (with the exception of RedSteppers) must pay a one-time, $31.50 fee for the class. If you are a non-music major, you need to bring cash with you (or a check made payable to "SOA - Marching Hundred"). This money, along with your health form, is needed prior to obtaining a uniform. If you are a music major, your fee will automatically be transferred from the school of music fee you're paying, so you just need your health form at uniform fitting. 4) Some important sites to visit prior to coming to camp: Band Camp Schedule: http://www.indiana.edu/~bands/bandcamp09.pdf Directions to Hundred Hall: http://www.indiana.edu/~bands/bandmap.pdf 5) Review of first meeting times and dates: ALL percussion - Saturday, August 22 - Marching Hundred Hall - 1:00 p.m. (all dorm percussion can check in on Friday, August 21, NOT Saturday the 22nd) ALL rookie woodwind and brass - Sunday, August 23 - Marching Hundred Hall - 7:30 p.m. NO instruments needed that night - dorm check in is that day beginning at 8:00 a.m. RedStepper auditions - Tuesday, August 25 - Gladstein Fieldhouse - 10:00 a.m. (you can check into the dorms that day after 8:00 a.m.) ALL VETS - 1st meeting - Tuesday night, August 25 - Marching Hundred Hall - 7:00 p.m. (dorm vets can check in that day starting at 8:00 a.m.) 6) The IU drumline is expecting a few openings for cymbal players this fall. If any wind players have an interest in receiving info on the IU Drumline, please contact Joel Brainard at: jbrainar@indiana.edu That just about covers it! If you have ANY questions, please do not hesitate to drop me an e-mail and we'll do what we can to make your initial trip to Bloomington a successful one! ![]() Boy Band Music - sent August 12: OK, OK, I know - many of you just can't wait to get your hands on the "Boy Band Medley" we'll be playing for our first show on Sept. 3. If any of you have any items from last year, please bring them to camp. If one (or more) of your roommates has left any item behind, please bring it as well!! 2) Band Camp can be hot here in Bloomington. Please make certain you are prepared to march on asphalt most of the day - here is a quick list of items to bring with you next week: *sunscreen *a hat of some kind *loose fitting clothing - style is NOT important during Band Camp! *a good pair of comfortable, well-built tennis shoes (NO sandals, flip flops, beach shoes, etc.) *water bottle or jug *any other item you feel you need for camp In addition, we ask your private horn be in working condition as you start camp. Everyone in Hundred needs a lyre for their instrument (with the exception of piccolo and percussion). Everyone will be issued flip folders, but you MUST have a lyre for you horn. Try and take care of the lyre before reaching town 3) Please refer to the Band Camp schedule to confirm arrival dates: http://www.indiana.edu/~bands/bandcamp09.pdf 4) At this point, ALL rookies have been added to the appropriate dorm early arrival list: FRIDAY, August 21 for Percussion and UnderGrad Staff SUNDAY, August 23 for rookie woodwinds and brass TUESDAY, August 25 for redsteppers and vets Once again, if you are a vet who needs in the dorms on Tuesday, AND YOU HAVEN'T CONTACTED US YET THIS SUMMER, please reply to this note so we can add you to the list. 5) Our first meeting for the rookies is Sunday night, August 23 - 7:30 p.m. at Marching Hundred Hall (once again, download the band camp schedule above for specific information). No need to bring your instrument that night - the meeting is informational only. We start to play and march on Monday, August 24. We are all excited about the start of the season. New band seats, new tunes and shows, and most importantly, a Rose Bowl attitude is in place. If you have ANY questions about ANY topic having to do with the Marching Hundred, or the Department of Bands, do not hesitate to drop me an e-mail! ![]() Hundred Tailgate info - sent August 12: or over 10 years now, members of the IU Marching Hundred have been treated to a pre-game meal unlike any other in the country. Our tailgates are legendary, due to the outstanding volunteer work by many parents and friends of the Hundred. You'll see below a note from Jim and Gail Zmierski, who are heading up this years tailgate. PLEASE pass this info along to your parents and friends who might be able to volunteer time or make a donation to keep this wonderful event on course for 2009: Marching Hundred Members, So do you like to be fed before each home game? Well, we like feeding you, but we can use some help. My name is Gail Zmierski and with my husband Jim, we coordinate the pre-game feeding of the Marching Hundred. We need you to let your parents know that they can help us with donations and/or help. All of the food that we feed you is donated by the parents, nothing comes from the Marching Hundred and we don't charge you. Please forward the following information to your parents so that we can continue to feed you. We can add them to an e-mail list to ask for donations of food or money, if they can't make it to the games. We are feeding approximately 350 hungry students this year for 6 home games. Please help us with this, so we can continue to feed you well. Please ask them to e-mail us at: jzmierski@comcast.net, to have their names added to our list and then we will send them e-mails before each game to see if they can donate and/or help, or they can contact us at: Jim/Gail home phone: 219-464-2217 Gail's cell phone: 219-395-0108 Address: 328 Mt. Jackson Ave Chesterton, IN 46304 Just an FYI, we are feeding a lot of people and we have no place to make or reheat the food. We do have electrical outlets to plug in crock pots. There is also no place to store anything from week to week. Hope to hear from your parents soon. Jim and Gail Zmierski ![]() Good Vibrations music - sent August 8: All Hundred Vet and Rookie wind players, please go to: http://music.indiana.edu/department/band/vibrations2009.shtml to find downloadable music to our first RedStepper feature of the year, "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys. Read the text carefully and feel free to download your part. There is also a midi version (it will sound kinda corny, but it works!) you can play and watch your part. This is part of our first show, "Tribute to Boy Bands" - a spoof we're doing on Thursday night, Sept. 3 at our first game of the year. That show will be completed with only 3 days rehearsal!! Vet trumpets and bones who played 1st or 2nd part will be e-mailed those parts soon. ![]() Early August update - sent August 3: Here is your next Marching Hundred update - Happy August to all of you! 1) Due to scheduling conflicts, many of you did not have the opportunity to attend Summer Orientation here at IU. During Band Camp week, you'll be excused from Hundred practice to take care of meeting with your advisor AND registering for classes. We'll simply ask you keep the Graduate Student assigned to your section informed when you need to leave. 2) Here is a direct link to our Band Camp Schedule: http://www.indiana.edu/~bands/bandcamp09.pdf Use this as a guide to help plan your days during Camp. Also, print out a copy and share with family and friends so they know when you'll be busy during the day. 3) Another reminder - please print out, fill out, and bring back with you the Health Form you'll find here: http://www.indiana.edu/~bands/healthform.pdf You will not be issued a uniform until this form is turned in AT Band Camp. 4) To reivew, here are the report times for Marching Hundred vets and rookies: *ALL PERCUSSION Move into the dorms on Friday, August 21 (if needed) 1st Meeting - Saturday, August 22 - 1:00 p.m. - Marching Hundred Hall *ALL ROOKIE Piccolos, Clarinets, Alto and Tenor Saxes, Trumpets, Horns, Trombones, Baritones, Sousaphones (Tubas) - in other words, ALL WINDS! Yes, you are allowed to miss Band Camp activities for Welcome Week items; however, the more we see you at camp, the better opportunity we have to evaluate your playing and marching. Once you arrive on campus, ask the upperclassmen in Hundred about which activities for Welcome Week would be the most beneficial. 2) The Marching Hundred supplies the following instruments: Mellophones (we use "F" horns, and will supply either a cup mouthpiece OR a regular horn mouthpiece adapter) Baritones Sousaphones Percussion The other instruments are YOUR responsibility. We use piccolo, not flute. 3) Another reminder for you and your family and friends to purchase Band Zone season tickets this year. Each season ticket is $198.00 - a savings of over $30.00. These seats will be located in the new "Band Zone" in the North end of Memorial Stadium. Call 1-866 - IUSPORTS for more details. ![]() Massive July update - sent July 28: To rookies and vets of the 2009 Marching Hundred: This is your latest update from the Department of Bands/Wind Conducting and Athletic Bands at Indiana University! Please read all info carefully - if you have any questions, please reply to this note and we'll help you out! 1) Early check info: I do apologize for all of the conflicting information you may have received from IU about early dorm check in this year. Below is the early check in schedule for 2009: Friday, August 21 - Percussion and UnderGrad Staff members ONLY Saturday, August 22 - NO MOVE INS TODAY Sunday, August 23 - ALL rookie winds Monday, August 24 - NO MOVE INS TODAY Tuesday, August 25 - RedSteppers and vet wind players (dorms will be open for check in at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, Sunday, and Tuesday) As stated earlier, if you are rookie, you need to do NOTHING to have your name placed on the list. If you are a vet percussion member, and you haven't contacted us to be added to the early dorm list, do so NOW! If you are a vet wind player, and want to move in earlier than Tuesday, August 25, you need to contact RPS yourself and arrange your check in. You'll pay up front for all nights you'll move in, then be credited later for Tuesday (the night we pay). 2) The Marching Hundred will perform 6 different shows this year! For many of you, this will be a change from your high school career. We do not send out music ahead of camp - we use Band Camp time for music instruction and technique. This year, you will be able to download one of our first pieces, "Good Vibrations" in just a couple of weeks. That will give you one selection to prepare before camp starts. 3) All Marching Hundred uniform parts are provided for you, with the exception of black shoes. We ask you bring with you all black shoes (no stripes, etc.), preferably with a heel (so the spat elastic can ride under the shoe in front of the heel). Many of you used black shoes in high school band, so bring them along and we'll check them. If you are purchasing shoes, try and find comfortable, leather shoes with a heel. 4) The only fee you pay for the Marching Hundred is a one-time uniform fee. If you are a non-music major, you'll need to bring $31.50 in CASH or CHECK (made payable to "SOA - Marching Hundred") with you to camp (I know the amount is a bit strange, but that's IU!). If you are a music major, your fee will be transferred from the Jacobs School of Music program fee - you do NOT need to bring cash to camp. 5) Some have been wondering about "auditions" and how they work for the Hundred. Details can be found on our website (www.marchinghundred.org), but in a nutshell . . . ALL brass players are accepted into the group automatically. During Band Camp, you'll be evaluated on playing and marching, and then selections will be made for our full-time performance block. Those not selected for the full-time performance block will be on reserve status. This only means you will not necessarily have a half-time or pre-game spot each week. You are still in the group, and will still receive all benefits other members receive - you simply will be rotating in and out throughout the year. ALL woodwind players will be evaluated on marching and playing throughout the week and then selections will be made for membership in the group on Thursday night of band camp. Those who are not accepted are asked to come back on Friday morning to "re-audition" for a spot in the reserve block. If you are accepted into the reserve block, you will simply not have a full time spot for pre-game and half-time - you'll rotate in and out as needed. The good news - last year, we did not "cut" any woodwinds from the group. We can't guarantee that will happen this year, but please do not worry - if you have marched in your high school band, show great attitude during the week, you'll be fine! 6) Many of you are interested in playing in a concert organization while you're at IU - we definitely have the group for you! The All-Campus Band meets on Monday nights in the fall and spring (7:00 - 8:30 p.m.) and is open to all majors at IU - no audition is necessary. This group gives one concert per semester, and is a great way for you to continue playing in a concert setting. You'll find many Hundred members enjoy playing in the All-Campus Band - ask around when you get to campus, and simply sign up for X001 in the Jacobs School of Music course catalog. 7) All members of the Hundred MUST have a completed Health form prior to receiving a uniform during camp. Go to this website: http://www.indiana.edu/~bands/healthform.pdf print out the form, fill it out, and bring with you to band camp. This information is kept confidential, and will be used ONLY in medical emergencies. 8) We do allow limited class conflicts in Hundred. If you are a rookie member, we'll give you 30 minutes each week for class conflicts. If you are a 2nd year member, you receive one hour per week. This should allow most of you to participate in Hundred AND attend classes! 9) Here are some URL's that will help you in planning for Band Camp and for the fall season: *Marching Hundred website: www.marchinghundred.0rg *Marching Hundred "rookie" info page: http://www.indiana.edu/~bands/rookies.php *Band Camp schedule: http://www.indiana.edu/~bands/bandcamp09.pdf *2009 Hundred performance schedule: http://www.indiana.edu/~bands/gameday.php *IU Athletics website: http://www.iuhoosiers.com *IU Department of Bands website: http://www.music.indiana.edu/department/band/ I hope all of you are enjoying the final days of summer. We certainly look forward to meeting and greeting you in just a few weeks. Additional updates will be coming in the next few weeks, along with downloadable music for you for the first show. If you are new to our e-mail mailing list, you can view past e-mails here: http://www.music.indiana.edu/department/band/2009emails.shtml If you have ANY questions, please do not hesitate to reply to this note. Welcome to the Marching Hundred! Whether you are new to IU or just new to the Hundred, we are VERY excited to have you join us! We look forward to meeting you and hope that you are as excited about the ?09 season as we are. We are the drum majors for the upcoming year and it's our mission to not only know marching maneuvers and calls, but also to get to know every one of you so that your Hundred experience is the best it can be. I'm Tonya Mitchell, a junior Music Education major from Atlanta, Georgia. (actually Lawrenceville, but no one knows where that is...) Clarinet is my major instrument although I marched tenor sax and trombone the past couple years. I'm Annie Herchen, also a Music Education major; however, I am a senior from Duxbury/Plymouth, Massachusetts. Flute is my major instrument although I've been playing cello since 5th grade and tenor saxophone since high school. I also almost had a dance minor. The Marching Hundred has students from many states and sometimes even countries. We are also compiled of students with a plethora of majors and career goals. And yet we come together with school spirit and a love of music. So get excited to cheer on the Hoosiers into another high-scoring season! OK maybe not a high scoring season, but we have some great shows lined up so we can give the audience something to cheer for :-) If you have any questions about band camp, what you should bring, welcome week or anything else, please don't hesitate to contact us! We are both on Facebook - look for Tonya Mitchell and Annelise Herchen. Brass players are automatically accepted into the Hundred. You will be working during Band Camp for a spot in our permanent marching block. Woodwinds are using Band Camp as a 4-day audition into the band and the permanent marching block. You will be evaluated over the course of the week on playing (and sight-reading) ability, marching ability, and attitude. If you have marched during your high school career, you should have no trouble with our band camp schedule!! (ALL players will receive music at Band Camp - we do not send music early unless we have a performance during Camp week.) Plan now for camp by getting a good pair of comfortable tennis shoes (no sandals), a good water jug, sunscreen, and a Rose-Bowl attitude.
