Stephen W. Pratt - Director of
Bands
Stephen W. Pratt is Professor of Music and Director
of Bands at the Indiana University School of Music. He conducts the Wind Ensemble and teaches graduate conducting as well as other courses in the wind conducting
program. Professor Pratt is in constant demand as a guest conductor, clinician
and adjudicator of bands and orchestras in many states, and as a faculty member
of conducting clinics and workshops. Mr. Pratt also serves as Director of the
Indiana University Summer Music Clinic.
Mr. Pratt holds degrees from Indiana University and The University of Michigan.
He joined the IU faculty in 1984 and was honored as a faculty member of the
highest distinction in 1988 by the combined honor societies on campus. In 1993
he was the recipient of the Distinguished Service to Music Medal awarded by
Kappa Kappa Psi, the national collegiate band honorary organization. In 1998
he was honored with the Outstanding Bandmaster award by the Gamma chapter (Indiana)
of Phi Beta Mu and in 2001 honored with the Outstanding University Music Educator
Award, presented by the Indiana Music Educators Association. He serves the CBDNA
North Central Division as president, and has served as president of the Indiana
Bandmasters Association and as a member of the Indiana Music Educators Association
Board of Directors. He was Music Director and Conductor of the Bloomington Symphony
Orchestra from 1995-2000. Mr. Pratt has a number of years of experience teaching
bands and orchestras in the public schools of Sturgis, Michigan, where he conducted
groups of national recognition.

David C. Woodley - Director of Athletic
Bands/Associate Director of Bands
David C. Woodley, Professor of Music, Director of Athletic Bands and Associate Director
of Bands, was appointed to the School of Music
faculty in 1993. His duties include directing the Marching Hundred,
the Big Red Basketball Band, and administrating the All Campus Band. He also teaches
Wind Band Score Study, Arranging for Instrumental and Vocal Groups, and Marching Band Techniques in the School of Music. Prior to his
appointment at IU, Mr. Woodley served as Interim Assistant Director of Bands and Director
of the Hawkeye Marching Band at The University of Iowa in Iowa City and held
a similar position at The University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky.
Mr. Woodley has been commissioned by over 125 high school and college bands,
and has over 450 concert and athletic band arrangements to his credit. He also served as the founder and National Co-Chairman of the College
Band Directors National Association Athletic Band Advisory Council. Mr. Woodley received
a "Student Choice Award for Outstanding Faculty" in the spring of 2000. Mr.
Woodley received the Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from The University
of Iowa.

Dr. Jeffrey D. Gershman - Associate Director of Bands
Dr. Jeffrey D. Gershman was named Associate Director of Bands and an Associate Professor of Music at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 2008. Dr. Gershman is conductor of the Symphonic Band and teaches classes in undergraduate music education and graduate conducting. Dr. Gershman's past positions include serving as the Director of Instrumental Activities at Texas A&M University-Commerce, the Interim Director of Bands at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, and the Co-Director of Instrumental Music at Monroe-Woodbury High School in Central Valley, New York. Dr. Gershman holds two degrees from Indiana University, having received his Bachelor of Music Education with High Distinction as well as his Master of Music in Wind Conducting - the first such degree awarded by the Jacobs School of Music. He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts in Wind Conducting degree at The University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Gershman maintains an active conducting schedule, having led performances with both of Dallas' professional wind ensembles, the Dallas Wind Symphony and the Lone Star Wind Orchestra as well as honor bands throughout the country. He has presented lectures at many state and national conventions in addition to publishing articles on repertoire and programming which have been hailed as "groundbreaking." As an arranger, Dr. Gershman's transcriptions of works by Frank Zappa and John Corigliano have received critical acclaim, with performances at Carnegie Hall as well as regional and national conventions.

Dr. Paul W. Popiel - Assistant Director of Bands
Dr. Paul Popiel is Assistant Director of Bands and Associate Director of the Marching Hundred at Indiana University. In this capacity he conducts the Concert Band and teaches courses in conducting, band administration and wind history. Prior to his appointment at IU, Popiel was the Associate Director of Bands and Director of the Cowboy Marching Band at Oklahoma State University, where his duties included conducting the Concert Band and the Frontiers New Music Ensemble, supervising student teachers, and teaching courses in music education.
Popiel taught in the public schools of Texas and Michigan. He holds degrees from Truman State University, the University of Notre Dame, and Michigan State University. As a 1996 Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar, he earned a Postgraduate Diploma in 20th-Century Music at the University of Bristol, England. He recently served as Resident Conductor of the Boston University Tanglewood Institute Wind Ensemble as the Frank L. Battisti Conducting Fellow.
Dr. Popiel maintains an active schedule as a drill designer, clinician, adjudicator, and guest conductor. He holds memberships in College Band Directors National Association, Music Educators National Conference, Collegiate Music Society, Kappa Kappa Psi, and Tau Beta Sigma.

Director of Bands Emeritus Ray Cramer

Ray E. Cramer is the former chairman of the Band Department at Indiana
University. He conducted the Wind Ensemble, Chamber Winds, and University Orchestra
and taught graduate conducting and wind literature classes. Past president
of the College Band Directors National Association. President of the board of
the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. In constant demand as guest conductor,
clinician, and adjudicator internationally. Regular guest conductor of The Musashino
Academy of Music in Tokyo. Prof. Cramer holds D.M. and B.S. degrees from Western
Illinois University and an M.A. degree from the University of Iowa.

2009 Associate Instructors
Scott Jones is currently pursuing the Doctor of Music degree and serves as an Associate Instructor in the Department of Bands/Wind Conducting at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Prior to coming to IU, he served as Interim Assistant Director of Bands at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he directed the Symphony Band, Panther Basketball Band and supervised graduate conductors with the University Band. He was active in all administrative aspects of the Band program including management of the Honors Band and Concert Band Festivals, supervision of band staff and librarians, and recruitment and retention of ensemble personnel. Mr. Jones holds a Master of Music Degree in Instrumental Conducting from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, a Master of Music in Saxophone from The Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, and a Bachelor of Music in Performance from Grand Valley State University. Mr. Jones has also held positions with the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra, Morgan State University, Maryland Conservatory of Music, The Peabody Preparatory, The Highlands School (Maryland), and served frequently as a guest clinician/adjudicator. He currently holds memberships in the College Band Directors National Association, the National Band Association, and the College Music Society.

Matt Holzner serves as an Associate Instructor in the Department of Bands, and is currently pursuing the Master of Music in Wind Conducting degree at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Mr. Holzner received his Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Illinois in 2005 where he studied tuba with Mark Moore. A Chicago area native, Mr. Holzner most recently served as Director of Bands of the Somonauk Unit School District in Somonauk, IL. There he oversaw the instrumental music activities of the entire district grades 5-12. Under his direction, his students earned high rankings at district and state level organizational and solo/ensemble contests. These groups have also enjoyed recent performance tours throughout Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri and Texas. He has remained an active performer on tuba and has held recent positions in the Dekalb Municipal Band, Illinois Valley Wind Ensemble and Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra. He has studied conducting with Rodney Winther, Ed Higgins, Tom Caneva, Pete Griffin and Allan McMurray. His professional affiliations include the National Band Association, the Music Educators National Conference, and the International Tuba and Euphonium Association (ITEA).

William Petersen, a candidate for the DM degree, comes to Indiana University from Virginia Tech University, where he served as Associate Director of Bands and Assistant Director of the Virginia Tech Marching Band. William conducted the Concert Band at Virginia Tech, and ran the Basketball Band for both the men's and women's basketball team. William holds the BME and MM degree from Indiana University, where he studied tuba with Daniel Perantoni, and conducting with Ray E. Cramer and Stephen W. Pratt.
