Who needs to audition?

All students in the Jacobs School of Music who are not doctoral students and who must do choral ensembles must audition. Also, any non-music major who wishes to sing in a Jacobs School of Music Ensemble must audition.

How do I sign up for an audition?

You can sign up for your audition in MA051 beginning August 3rd. There are two separate audition sign-up sheets corresponding to two separate audition groups, voice majors and non-voice majors. You will sign up for the appropriate group.

You will be given an Ensemble Audition Form to bring completed to your audition.

Voice-majors sign up for 7 minute auditions and sing one song in any style or language – No opera arias, please. An accompanist will be provided, so bring your sheet music. (Be mindful that the accompanist will sight-read.) We WILL ask you to sight-read a melodic and a rhythmic excerpt.

Non-majors sign up for a 5 minute audition and sing any song you are familiar with, or we can provide simple folk tunes, familiar melodies, hymns, etc. If you are an experienced singer we will have you audition with the voice-majors. We WILL ask you to sight-read music and rhythmic notation.

What happens after your audition?

Audition results and further instructions for call-backs will be posted outside the Choral Office (MA051) by Monday, August 31st.

Can’t find your name on a choral roster or instruction notice?

Don’t worry. That doesn’t mean we don’t want you. On the contrary! It means you have been assigned to an ensemble and we are waiting to make all decisions before posting the final roster. When the final rosters are posted, they will include information on when and where to pick up music in time for your first rehearsal.

Don’t wait until the first week of classes to sign up for a choral ensemble placement audition.

Why? Because it’s too late and we will already be doing callbacks.
