PROGRAM NOTES
Several times throughout my life, I've had the opportunity to go out on a lake in my uncle's catamaran (a double-hulled sailing vessel). The excitement and eventual tranquility I experienced while being “out at sea” stirred in me a desire to eventually sail the ocean, perhaps on a long voyage. For me, this ocean voyage embodies feelings of solitude, tranquility, and sadness mixed with the thrill of being at the mercy of the sea.
In Sail Away to Soft, Sweet Bells , I have tried to portray an imagined journey at sea. An important part of this journey are the bells and other deep ringing sounds that recur throughout the piece, perhaps reflecting on some other, deeper feelings I have about life and its meaning. I hope you enjoy.
