FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions:

  Why can't I see the videos/scores/commentaries?
    1. Each element on the screen is based on Flash version 7 or later. If you are having problems seeing any of the content, make sure you have the latest version of Flash. To test for the version installed on your machine or to download the latest version, go here.
to top   2. If you have the latest Flash version but you still are unable to see anything, then it might be related to security. Flash and your browser may have certain security restrictions in place that prohibit the playback of audio on your machine. To make sure those are set properly, go here.

  • Select the drop-down list labeled "Edit locations..."

I can see everything but I don't hear any audio.
    1. If you can see everything on the screen then it is likely you have the proper Flash version. Make sure your speakers are working and your computer's audio settings are correct.

  • PC USERS - It is possible to have the Volume Control in Windows un-muted and turned all the way up but the Wave setting muted. This will effectively mute most web based audio.

Example: Make sure the Wave mute is unchecked.

NOTE: Computer manufacturers may include other audio drivers specific to your machine, make sure those are also un-muted.

Example: SW Synth on my Dell Laptop.

    2. Make sure the audio of your computer works with other media or applications. For example, play a personal music CD or select any video from Apple's Movie Trailers page. (Recommend you choose a non-HD version.)

Why does it take so long to load the videos? Is my Internet connection speed fast enough?
to top

The videos used in this project are of relatively high quality so as to be clear enough for users to see detail in the performances and the performers' actions. For that reason, if you are at home and using DSL for your connection, the videos may take nearly a minute to completely load. Once they have loaded though, they are in memory and you can quickly navigate from one portion of the score to the next.

We recommend that students use the application while on campus due to the university's high-speed network. If that is not possible, we recommend then at least a digital cable (broadband) connection for home users.

Why can't I see a second window when I click on Open Another Instrument Window?
    1. Depending on your browser, certain pop-up blocker technology will prohibit the window from opening. Set it to temporarily allow it for this site. (NOTE: Pressing the CTRL key while clicking the link will usually override the pop-up blocker for that link.)
to top   2. If you are using a browser that opens new windows in tabs, make sure the window isn't already open in a new tab somewhere along the top.
    3. Javascript is used to open the new window. Make sure your browser will allow Javscript to at least ask for permission to run.

When I press the spacebar to play or pause the video, nothing happens. What do I need to do to make that work?
to top   1. If the page has just appeared and is loading, it might be that the video has not completely loaded. If you are on a DSL connection, this may take up to a minute. If you are on a broadband connection, this could take up to 30 seconds. If you are on campus, this might be due to network congestion and may require you to simply reload or refresh the application in your browser.
    2. The Flash application has lost "focus" and so any pressing of the spacebar is not directed to it. To put the focus back on the Flash application, click anywhere within it or on it. Once it has focus, pressing the spacebar will initiate its play and pause functionality.
