COSTUME CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY

The Costume Construction Technology program is a joint degree program of the Indiana University School of Music and the Department of Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design (AMID) in the College of Arts and Sciences (COAS).  The program offers structured coursework in basic couture sewing, pattern drafting, dressmaking and tailoring; as well as a four-semester ensemble requirement that affords hands-on experience working in the Elizabeth Sage Costume Collection, the IU School of Music Costume Shop, and as wardrobe personnel for the IU Opera Theater and the IU Ballet Theater.  Students earn a concurrent Associate of Science (A.S.) degree from the School of Music in addition to their Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Apparel Merchandising.  Some students, particularly those interested in fashion design, use the Costume Construction Technology program as a foundation for their participation in the Individualized Major Program (IMP).

The Costume Construction Technology program encourages talented students who wish to participate in internships and employment opportunities in summer theatres across the country.

While recent graduates of the program have been working as staff and interns at the Santa Fe Opera, the Central City Opera, and the TDF Costume Collection, many go on to work in the apparel industry, having gained an appreciation for and knowledge of the technical demands of apparel and costume construction that will serve their careers in fashion design and merchandising.

For detailed program information, see Costume Construction Technology on the AMID website, or contact Deb Christiansen in AMID or Mary Grusak in the School of Music.
