The Johann Götting fortepiano was a gift from Catherine Smith, who moved to Bloomington after retiring from Northwestern.  She purchased the instrument in Vienna, the city of its origin. The fortepiano was made between 1820 and 1825; there are only two extant instruments by this maker.
