Brenda Brenner

Associate Professor of Music Education

Brenda Brenner specializes in the area of string music education, teaching applied violin and courses in violin and string pedagogy.   She holds a D.M.A. (1990) and M.M. (1986) from the Eastman School of Music in Violin Literature and Performance, and a B.M. and B.M.E. (1984, summa cum laude) from the Wichita State University.  Dr. Brenner has taught at the IU School of Music since 1993, when she was appointed Assistant Professor of Music (Violin) and Assistant Director of the IU String Academy.  Her String Academy students have been featured in concerts in major venues throughout the United States and have presented tours in France, Japan, Sweden, Spain and Italy.  Her students are winners of several prestigious competitions and have taken leadership roles in orchestras and classrooms throughout the country.  They have been featured in performances at the national conventions of the American String Teachers Association, the National Association of Schools of Music, and the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, and are the subject of an Emmy nominated documentary titled Circling Around.  Dr. Brenner also teaches and conducts at the IU Summer String Academy, and is Assistant Director of the IU Retreat for Professional Violinists and Violists.  Prior to her arrival at IU, she was Assistant Professor of Music at Carleton College. 

Active as a chamber music performer, Dr. Brenner is a prizewinner in several prestigious competitions, including the Cleveland Quartet Competition, Banff International Quartet Competition, Young Concert Artists International Competition, and the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.  She has participated in several prestigious chamber music festivals, holding fellowships at the Aspen Center for Advanced Quartet Study and the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival (Yale University) where she worked intensively with the Cleveland, Tokyo, Juilliard, Emerson, and American Quartets.   She continues to be active as a performer at IU, where she collaborates with fellow faculty members including her husband, organist Christopher Young. 

In addition to her appointment in the music education department, Dr. Brenner continues to serve as Assistant Director of the IU String Academy.
