Associate Professor of Music
Lissa Fleming May, Associate Professor and Chair of Music Education, joined the faculty of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 1999. Her duties include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in music education, and placing and supervising music student teachers.
A noted jazz educator, Lissa served as the Jazz Band Director at Oakland University, during her tenure as Supervisor of Fine Arts for the Waterford School District. Prior to that, she was Associate Professor of Bands, Jazz Studies at Purdue University. Under her direction, the Purdue Jazz Band toured the Far East, presenting concerts in Japan and China. Lissa is a past president of Indiana Bandmasters Association and the current president of Indiana Music Educators Association.
Dr. May holds DME, MS, and BME degrees from Indiana University. Her publications include a book for music educators entitled Getting Started with Jazz, numerous compositions for concert band and jazz ensemble, as well as music education research articles in JRME and JHRME and the IAJE Jazz Research Proceedings. She has served as a clinician and/or guest conductor throughout the United States and in Brazil, and China.
