Director of Athletic Bands
Associate Professor of Music
DAVID C. WOODLEY was appointed in the fall of 1993 as
Assistant Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands at
Indiana University. His duties include directing the 300-member
Marching Hundred, the 100-member Big Red Basketball Band and the
Concert Band. He also teaches Arranging for Instrumental and Vocal
Groups, and Marching Band Techniques in the School of Music.
Previous to his appointment at IU, Mr. Woodley served two years as
Visiting Assistant Professor of Music/Interim Director of The
University of Iowa Hawkeye Marching Band and five years as Assistant
Director of Bands/Director of the Cardinal Marching Band at the
University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky. His duties at both
schools included directing the Concert Band and teaching Basic Band
Literature, Marching Band Techniques and Arranging for Band. He also
directed the Cardinal Marching Band each year at Churchill Downs in
Louisville, where the band served as the “Official Band of the
Kentucky Derby”.
Mr. Woodley has over 350 marching and pep band arrangements to his
credit, and has been commissioned by over 100 college and high
school bands. Mr. Woodley has numerous arrangements for concert band
and brass ensemble, including the Sergei Rachmaninoff “Prelude, Op.
3, No. 2” transcription for concert band which is published by TRN
Music Publisher.
He is a member of the College Band Director’s National Association,
the National Band Association, Phi Beta Mu, Music Educator’s
National Conference and is an Honorary Member of Kappa Kappa Psi and
Tau Beta Sigma (Mr. Woodley serves as Rho chapter sponsor). In 1989,
he was named an Honorable Kentucky Colonel, and in 1993 was named
the national Chairman of the College Band Director’s National
Association Athletic Band Advisory Council. In the spring of 2000,
Mr. Woodley won a "Student Choice Award for Outstanding Faculty",
presented by the IU Student Alumni Association .
A native of Winterset, Iowa, Mr. Woodley received the Bachelor and
Master of Music Degrees from The University of Iowa. While at Iowa,
he served as Drum Major for the Hawkeye Band in 1982 and 1983 and as
a Graduate Assistant from 1984 to 1986. During his stay at Iowa,
Woodley also served as Pep Band Director for both Men’s and Women’s
Athletics.
