E635: College Music Teaching. (3 cr)Tu W Th 2:00 – 3:35 (6/13/08 – 8/08/08) This course is an ideal choice for graduate students looking for a general course that helps prepare college –level teachers of music performance, theory, history, composition, music education, or other fields in music. This is a project-based course. The first part of the semester focuses on the background and context of music instruction in the American college and university. The second part of the semester is devoted to the practical skills needed by college music teachers, providing opportunities for practice teaching individuals and class-sized groups. The final portion of the semester includes discussions with various faculty members across the School of Music to provide insights into successful job searches and college music teaching.
