I am Trevor Ousey and I am a freshman music education major here at the Jacobs School of Music. I was born and raised in Colorado Springs, CO but my residence for the past six years has been the lovely state of South Carolina. It was these years spent in South Carolina that made me realize my true passion for music and my desire to share that passion with other students. While in South Carolina, I was a member of the All-State band and participated in many other ensembles including the youth orchestra, the marching band, and the high school jazz ensemble to name a few. I also had many influences during my years in middle and high school that impacted my career choice. Two of my band directors, Mr. David Allison and Mr. Vince Clayton, both contributed greatly to my love of music. They taught me how to appreciate music for more than just the technical rhythms and the complicated harmonies, but instead for the emotion that comes forth in the preparation and the performance of music. It was my private teacher on clarinet, Mrs. Jean Hein, who challenged me to become the best player I can be. She taught me how to set goals and, more importantly, how to go about reaching them. Ultimately, this led to my acceptance into the Honor Band of America sponsored by Bands of America in 2006. Here I had the privilege to be under the baton of former director of bands at Indiana University, Ray Cramer. This weeklong experience with Mr. Cramer opened my eyes as a junior in high school to the possibility of attending the prestigious Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. During my senior year, I was chosen to be the drum major for my high school marching band. This experience made me realize not only do I love music, but also I love to teach and to lead. By October I knew I wanted to audition for the Jacobs School of music to become a music educator. So far, my time spent here has gone far beyond my expectations. The opportunities to participate in music are endless. The staff is world-renowned and the students are extremely talented. In general, I look forward to my future here at the Jacobs School of Music. I know, upon completing my degree here, I will have a strong foundation to becoming the best music educator I can possibly be.
Sherrie Denise Howard, undergraduate Music Education Major
The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music is led by some of the leading professionals in the field. It is a great place to get an education and it has a wealth of resources within and around the University that allow students to develop our teaching experience. For example, this past summer I had an excellent experience teaching at Stages Bloomington Musical Theatre Camp for two weeks. I taught classes of students from grades 1-5. My job at the camp was to teach theatre-related activities and I worked for three hours each day, teaching two to three classes during that time. This great opportunity allowed me to gain some teaching experience. I have had a love for music ever since I was a little girl. Several teachers and mentors in my life starting from when I was very young have inspired me and this made me want to pursue teaching music and theatre. I love it so much that I want to be able to share it with others and become an educator. I want to be able to make a difference and share this passion with others.
David Carlsen-Landy, undergraduate Music Education major
Sarah Robinson, doctoral student Hello, my name is Sarah Robinson. I recently started a PhD in Music Education after teaching for 12 years. My teaching experience includes all grade levels k-12, both instrumental band and general music, and a variety of experiences such as selection as an Iowa Alliance for the Arts Leadership select member, leader of a Sister City relationship with Ichikawadaimon, Japan, and as an orchestral performer. I felt that the Jacob School of Music complemented a Masters degree from Northwestern University considering its quality and reputation. I also looked forward to being in the center of an internationally known school with students from a variety of countries. Furthermore, the breadth and quality of expertise found amongst faculty here is truly inspiring. Whether the goal is to become a better teacher, musician, or researcher, everything is possible here. My most current research interests include research on attraction to participation in secondary school music programs in conjunction with attitudes of parents and students towards music. Other academic interests include computer technology and conducting. All of these experiences enhance my final goal of impacting the quality of music education through research and training future educators at the university level.
