Trevor Kenneth Ousey, undergraduate Music Education major

I am Trevor Ousey and I am a freshman music education major here at the Jacobs School of Music. I was born and raised in Colorado Springs, CO but my residence for the past six years has been the lovely state of South Carolina. It was these years spent in South Carolina that made me realize my true passion for music and my desire to share that passion with other students. While in South Carolina, I was a member of the All-State band and participated in many other ensembles including the youth orchestra, the marching band, and the high school jazz ensemble to name a few. I also had many influences during my years in middle and high school that impacted my career choice. Two of my band directors, Mr. David Allison and Mr. Vince Clayton, both contributed greatly to my love of music. They taught me how to appreciate music for more than just the technical rhythms and the complicated harmonies, but instead for the emotion that comes forth in the preparation and the performance of music.

It was my private teacher on clarinet, Mrs. Jean Hein, who challenged me to become the best player I can be. She taught me how to set goals and, more importantly, how to go about reaching them. Ultimately, this led to my acceptance into the Honor Band of America sponsored by Bands of America in 2006. Here I had the privilege to be under the baton of former director of bands at Indiana University, Ray Cramer. This weeklong experience with Mr. Cramer opened my eyes as a junior in high school to the possibility of attending the prestigious Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. During my senior year, I was chosen to be the drum major for my high school marching band. This experience made me realize not only do I love music, but also I love to teach and to lead. By October I knew I wanted to audition for the Jacobs School of music to become a music educator. So far, my time spent here has gone far beyond my expectations. The opportunities to participate in music are endless. The staff is world-renowned and the students are extremely talented. In general, I look forward to my future here at the Jacobs School of Music. I know, upon completing my degree here, I will have a strong foundation to becoming the best music educator I can possibly be.

Sherrie Denise Howard, undergraduate Music Education Major

Hello my name is Sherrie Howard and I am studying choral and general music education here at Indiana University. I am from Chesterton, Indiana, where I was involved in the show choirs, the madrigal dinner, the musicals, the plays, the Trojan Guard marching band, and the pep band. Indiana University has a wide variety of ensembles that students can participate in. Here at Indiana University I am a proud member of The Singing Hoosiers, directed by Dr. Michael Schwartzkopf. I am also a member of the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Patrice Madura. I absolutely love being a part of these very wonderful ensembles. Indiana University is a great place to study music. I have grown so much more as a musician, an adult, and a teacher these past few years here at the University. It has been a great struggle for me to be able to pursue my passion here at the Jacobs School of Music but my experiences here have helped me grow so much and I am grateful for that.  After I graduate, I plan to teach elementary general music class or a middle school general music class and choir. I hope to get involved with the theatre department at the school as well.

The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music is led by some of the leading professionals in the field. It is a great place to get an education and it has a wealth of resources within and around the University that allow students to develop our teaching experience. For example, this past summer I had an excellent experience teaching at Stages Bloomington Musical Theatre Camp for two weeks. I taught classes of students from grades 1-5. My job at the camp was to teach theatre-related activities and I worked for three hours each day, teaching two to three classes during that time. This great opportunity allowed me to gain some teaching experience. I have had a love for music ever since I was a little girl. Several teachers and mentors in my life starting from when I was very young have inspired me and this made me want to pursue teaching music and theatre. I love it so much that I want to be able to share it with others and become an educator. I want to be able to make a difference and share this passion with others.

David Carlsen-Landy, undergraduate Music Education major

Hello, my name is David Carlsen-Landy and I’m currently a freshman majoring in Music Education with a focus on trombone/wind teaching. I came to Indiana University from Allen, Texas, about an hour North of Dallas. In Allen I was an active participant in Marching Band, Concert Band, Orchestra, as well as Jazz Band. I come from an extremely musical family in which all of my brothers play instruments, my mother played, and my father sang in a men's choir. With all of this musical knowledge so readily available, it was only natural that I pick up an instrument. And of course, as time went on and I got more involved in the musical areas of my school and city, I knew for sure that music was the only thing for me. While I originally wanted to perform in a major orchestra (who doesn't?), it was my private instructor, H. Dennis Smith, that truly inspired me to pursue education. He made such an impact on my life that I knew that I wanted to be able to do the same for someone my age in the future. He not only inspired me to perform well, but to live well. He taught me so many life lessons alongside all of my trombone lessons that it's impossible to remember them all! I can only hope to have inspired a young person one day. It's my dream to have a student come up to me and say "You're the reason I want to pursue music." When the time came to pick a college, I knew I needed To find a university that would not only continue to inspire me, but that would teach me how to inspire others, and it wasn't long before I got pointed in the direction of the IU Jacobs School of Music. With all of the great musical offerings available including opera, jazz bands, orchestra, concert bands, the Marching Hundred, recitals, guest soloists, music workshops and master classes, a phenomenal staff of educators with some of the most impressive backgrounds around, (and the list goes on!) I'm positive that the IU experience is just what I was looking for. There's never a shortage of great experiences around the entire IU campus, and while I’ve only been here for a short while, I know that there's nowhere I’d rather be.

Sarah Robinson, doctoral student

Hello, my name is Sarah Robinson. I recently started a PhD in Music Education after teaching for 12 years. My teaching experience includes all grade levels k-12, both instrumental band and general music, and a variety of experiences such as selection as an Iowa Alliance for the Arts Leadership select member, leader of a Sister City relationship with Ichikawadaimon, Japan, and as an orchestral performer. I felt that the Jacob School of Music complemented a Masters degree from Northwestern University considering its quality and reputation. I also looked forward to being in the center of an internationally known school with students from a variety of countries. Furthermore, the breadth and quality of expertise found amongst faculty here is truly inspiring. Whether the goal is to become a better teacher, musician, or researcher, everything is possible here. My most current research interests include research on attraction to participation in secondary school music programs in conjunction with attitudes of parents and students towards music. Other academic interests include computer technology and conducting. All of these experiences enhance my final goal of impacting the quality of music education through research and training future educators at the university level.
