The Musical Ear Conference

The Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University is pleased to announce “The Musical Ear,” a unique conference devoted exclusively to issues of ear training and aural skills, to be held on September 26, 2009. Invited speakers are Elizabeth Aaron (Mannes College), Gary Karpinski (University of Massachusetts at Amherst), and Nancy Rogers (Florida State University). The conference will conclude with a panel discussion featuring the three invited speakers and Mary Wennerstrom (Indiana University).
We invite proposals for presentations on any topic related to the musical ear, including but not limited to:
Innovative approaches to pedagogy
Ear training and cognition
Ear training involving non-standard repertoires
Papers should be planned for twenty-minute presentations, followed by ten minutes for discussion. Submissions should include:
A cover letter listing the author’s name, email address, telephone number, affiliation, and paper title, as well as any equipment required for the presentation (piano, stereo system, etc.).
A proposal of no more than 500 words, which must be anonymous. Additional materials such as musical examples will not count toward the word limit, but must not exceed two additional pages. Email submission is preferred; proposals must be submitted in PDF format to the email address given below. Paper submission is also possible; please include 5 copies of the proposal.
The submission deadline is May 15, 2009 (postmark deadline for paper submissions). Submissions should be sent to Kyle Adams, program chair, at kyadams @ indiana.edu (please write “’Musical Ear’ Submission” in the subject line), or to:
