Facilities and Resources

Our facilities include the Jacobs School of Music complex of five buildings containing studios, offices, classrooms, practice rooms, and several recital halls. The large Musical Arts Center houses lavish facilities for the performance of opera and large ensembles.

The music theory department resides in the beautiful Bess Meshulam Simon Music Library and Recital Center. Opened in 1995, the Simon building also houses the departments of musicology, music education, bands, and recording arts. It includes two recital halls, several classrooms, and the remarkable William and Gayle Cook Music Library, which includes approximately 143,000 books and scores, 17,000 microforms, 123,000 records, tapes, and CD's, and 205,000 orchestral and choral parts. The Variations2 system provides online access to a extensive collection of digitized recording and scores to users in the library and classrooms. Additional special collections of rare books and manuscripts are housed in the Lilly Library. Take a virtual tour of the Jacobs School of Music or the Bloomington Campus.

The department of music theory has been actively engaged in the development of methods and materials for computer-assisted instruction, using facilities in the music library and elsewhere on campus. A placement service is available at no cost. Ninety percent of our graduates serve as faculty members and administrators at leading colleges and universities in the United States and abroad; other graduates have various music-related positions in organizations such as computer companies or arts management agencies.

The intellectual and social life of the graduate student in music theory is enhanced by our Colloquium Series, and the numerous activities of the Graduate Theory Association, including the publication of the nationally circulated journal, the Indiana Theory Review.
