T545 Fall 1997

Analysis of Music Literature (3 cr.)

Prof. Lewis Rowell

1:00-2:15 p.m. MW Room M267

Prerequisites

T508, M541, and M542, or exemption from these deficiency courses

Description

T545 is designed to meet the needs of graduate students in fields other than music theory. Instead of focusing on particular methodologies such as Schenkerian or pitch-class set analysis, the course will provide experience in applying a wide variety of traditional analytic techniques to music from ca. 1700 to the early twentieth century. We will consider the goals of analysis, planning and writing analyses, how to become better consumers of published analyses, analysis as criticism, and semiotic approaches to music.
