Readings in Music Theory (3 cr.)

An introduction to music theory as a research field: its evolution, present state, objectives, issues, trends, topics, methods, resources, literature, and principal accomplishments. The course will be organized in three major units: (1 ) music theory as a discipline, (2) the theory of analysis, and (3) individual topics (e.g., aesthetics, cognition, pedagogy, semiotics, technology), with other members of the department presenting guest lectures on the literature and problems of their area of specialization. Course requirements will include short literature reviews, class presentations, and a bibliographical term paper on an approved topic. T550 is required for M.M. students in music theory and is open to non-majors.

Prerequisite: T508. The course will not use a text.
