Purpose
- T551 is devoted to the study of analytic techniques applicable to tonal music, including compositions of the early twentieth century.
Goals
- To develop an understanding of tonal hierarchy;
- To study various methods of analysis, including those dealing with musical form, melodic and harmonic pitch structure, and rhythm and meter; and
- To apply the above analytic methods to selected compositions.
Requirements:
- regular assigned readings
- one or two weekly assignments
- one term paper
- two exams (midterm and final)
