Purpose

  • T551 is devoted to the study of analytic techniques applicable to tonal music, including compositions of the early twentieth century.

Goals

  • To develop an understanding of tonal hierarchy;
  • To study various methods of analysis, including those dealing with musical form, melodic and harmonic pitch structure, and rhythm and meter; and
  • To apply the above analytic methods to selected compositions.

Requirements:

  • regular assigned readings
  • one or two weekly assignments
  • one term paper
  • two exams (midterm and final)
