Introduction to Analytical Techniques (3 cr.)

Description

T551 is devoted to the study of analytic techniques for tonal music, including compositions of the early twentieth century. The goals of the course are

  • to develop a thorough understanding of tonal hierarchy via the methodology of Lerdahl and Jackendoff in their Generative Theory of Tonal Music,
  • to study other methods of analysis, including those dealing with musical form, melodic and harmonic pitch structure, and rhythm and meter, and
  • to apply the above analytic methods to selected compositions.

Requirements:

  • regular assigned readings
  • one or two weekly assignments
  • one term paper
  • two exams (midterm and final)
