Musical systems of Antiquity; contrapuntal, modal, and rhythmic theory in medieval and Renaissance music treatises ca. 1600. Musical speculation as a literary genre and its historical and philosophical context; the evolution of systems of musical tuning. Required for Ph.D. students in music theory and open to students in other fields to the extent that space is available. All readings will be in English, but with emphasis on developing an extensive lexicon of Greek and Latin musical terms. Grading will be based on class participation, an annotated bibliography or an analytic study, and a term paper.
