T557/T658 Spring 1998

T557: Studies in the Theory of Music (2 cr.)

T658: Seminar in Music Theory (3 cr.)

Topic: The Music of Alban Berg

Prof. Lewis Rowell

1:00-2:15 PM TR Room M271

An analytic survey of Alban Berg's complete works, with particular focus on Wozzeck and Lulu. Course requirements will include listening, readings, presentations, and a research paper. Specific requirements for M.M. and doctoral students will vary both qualitatively and quantitatively, as reflected in such things as the frequency of presentations, the length and difficulty of the readings and works studied, and the problem chosen for the seminar paper. We anticipate that several places will be open to non-theory majors. Interested students should contact the instructor: rowell@indiana.edu.

Prerequisite: T508 (if required) or exemption from deficiency courses in music theory.
