Guidelines for Contributors

Indiana Theory Review welcomes articles on all aspects and subdisciplines of music theory and analysis, as well as reviews of recently published books in the field. Authors may submit articles and reviews by mail or by email, and should follow these guidelines:

1. For mail submissions, please include three copies of the complete double-spaced typescript (including necessary diagrams and excerpts), with pages, notes, figures, and musical examples numbered consecutively throughout. For email submissions, you may include files produced by any popular word processor; you may wish to contact the editor for specific information about acceptable formats. Please avoid identifying yourself, either directly or indirectly, anywhere in the article itself, reserving such identification for a separate cover letter.
2. Consult the latest edition of Kate Turabian’s A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations for standards of style and form; use footnotes for citations, rather than parenthetical references and reference lists.
3. For mail submissions, please include diagrams and musical examples on separate pages in camera-ready copy. Please make sure that they are no larger than 6" x 8.5". Examples will appear at approximately 80% of their original size when published, so be careful about including detail so fine that it becomes illegible when reproduced. You may specify preferred locations of examples within the text.
4. Please follow the recommendations of the Acoustical Society of America for octave designations (middle C = C4).
5. It is your responsibility as author to secure all copyright privileges for musical excerpts from works not in the public domain, and to pay any required fees for their use. Please supply the editor with a copy of the documents granting permission to reproduce these excerpts.

Authors whose articles are accepted for publication will be asked to provide electronic versions of their submissions. All works accepted for publication become the sole property of Indiana University under the terms of a standard copyright agreement we require of our authors. Questions regarding the details of this agreement should be directed to the editor.

Indiana Theory Review publishes replies, rebuttals, and comments pertaining to articles and reviews published here or elsewhere, as well as matters of general concern in the field of music theory. All correspondence of general interest will be included.

All submissions and correspondence should be addressed to:
