This dissertation provides an analytical study of Naji Hakim’s Symphony in Three Movements for Organ with focus on: structural unity and contrast; unity and contrast of pitch materials including cyclic themes, melodic elements, motivic elements, pitch centers and large-scale pitch relationships; unity and contrast of textural and timbre elements; unity and contrast of rhythmic elements.
Also included in the dissertation is a history of the Cavaille-Coll organ, an instrument that played a large role in the development of the French organ symphony, and a chapter that traces composers of 19th-20th century French symphonic organ music. The dissertation closes with an interview by the author with Naji Hakim discussing his compositional techniques and style.

This dissertation provides an analytical study of Naji Hakim’s The Embrace of Fire and explores both melodic and harmonic elements of unity and contrast in the work. Topics include the inclusion of Gregorian chant, the octatonic scale and its subsets as well as related sets.
Regarding the structural elements of the piece, Larson investigates the possibility of the use of the Golden Mean, as well as other numerical relationships. The overall proportions of the length of the work along with aspects of symmetry are also discussed.
