David DeBoor Canfield (DM 1983)
Alumnus David DeBoor Canfield (DM 1983) recently returned from Armenia where he oversaw the rehearsals and premiere of his newly completed Concerto after Khachaturian for Alto/Soprano Saxophone and Orchestra. The work was commissioned and premiered by the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia (Armenia's major orchestra), with soloist Hayrapet Arakelyan and conductor Sergey Smbatyan. It was the opening work of the 4th International Khachaturian Festival that runs from October 6th through December 10th, and was written to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Armenia's independence. This performance may be viewed on Khachaturyan & JAZZ 2016 (21 minutes into the video). Immediately upon his return from Armenia, Canfield flew to the University of North Texas to judge a saxophone competition where the two required pieces were two of his other saxophone concertos. These were performed by a dozen saxophonists in the studio of Dr. Eric Nestler of UNT. Upcoming on November 15th, Stephen Pratt and the Indiana University Wind Ensemble will premiere Canfield's Concerto for Winds and Percussion, a new three-movement 20-minute work written for this ensemble. It will be presented at 8:00 p.m. in the Musical Arts Center at IU.
