Chair, Music Theory
Our graduate program in music theory is a special blend of cutting-edge academic research and innovative pedagogy, enhanced by the rich musical life of one of the world's finest music schools, and coupled with the scholarly resources of a first-class university.
The music theory faculty represent broad and varied interests from the traditional to the experimental, and are nationally and internationally recognized leaders in their areas of research. We are a department actively involved in reaching out to the larger scholarly world, and we invite you to join us.
Membership in the Graduate Theory Association is open to all graduate students interested in music theory. With the ultimate purpose of promoting collegiality within the music theory community at IU, the group functions both as an academic/professional-development group and as a social organization.
Our many successful alumni attest to the extraordinary environment we offer. The overwhelming majority of our graduates obtain teaching and administrative positions in major research universities, liberal arts colleges, and schools of music.
The music theory department congratulates alumnus Mitchell Ohriner (MM 2007, PhD 2011), winner of the Society for Music Theory's Emerging Scholar Award for 2013, for his article "Grouping Hierarchy and Trajectories of Pacing in Performances of Chopin's Mazurkas," published in Music Theory Online in 2012.
See our new Activities and Accomplishments page to read about recent conference activity, publications, performances, and other accomplishments of students and faculty in the music theory department.
