T658 Theories of Rhythm and Meter

In this seminar we will study the key literature about rhythm and meter from about 1960 forward, including the works of Cooper and Meyer, Yeston, Lerdahl and Jackendoff, Carl Schachter, Christopher Hasty, and many others. The class will include theoretical and analytical selections about tonal and post-tonal music. In addition to completing the readings, students will write short reaction papers and and analysis assignments, will make short presentations and write a final paper.

Prerequisites: T551 Analytical Techniques for Tonal Music.
