Transfer Credit for M401 and M402

Policy on Acceptance of Transfer Credit
in Fulfilling the Undergraduate Music History Requirement
at Indiana University

1. Upper-division credit from music history or musicology courses with descriptions comparable to those of M401 and M402 will be recommended to the Director of Undergraduate Studies for transfer from NASM-accredited schools without further review. If the transfer credits are accepted and equal eight credit hours, Indiana University's upper-division requirement in music history will be completed. If the transfer credit is equal to less than eight hours, additional upper-division courses may be required, unless these credits are filled as described in paragraph 2.

2. Upper-division credit from music history or musicology courses with descriptions comparable to those of M400, M410, or M435 may be recommended for transfer from NASM-accredited schools as supplementing the transfer credit allowed under paragraph 1, subject to approval by the department chair.

3. No lower-division transfer credit will be accepted as filling any of Indiana University's upper-division music history requirement, except as allowed below.

4. Students who wish to (1) transfer lower-division credit, (2) transfer credit from schools not accredited by NASM, or (3) take Credit by Examination to satisfy their upper-division requirement in music history must complete the following steps (note the schedule at the bottom of this sheet):

  •
    (a) students must indicate their intent to pursue this option and the credit for which they wish to qualify by registering in the Musicology Office (Simon Center 225H).
    (b) a research paper of at least ten pages on a historical topic pertinent to the subject matter of M401 or M402 must be submitted as the first step in qualifying the student for an examination in either course; if the student wishes to be examined in both courses, two papers must be submitted.
    (c) the papers will be reviewed by the faculty member responsible for the appropriate course to determine their acceptability (an interview with the student may be required as part of the review); if the paper or papers are acceptable, the student will be admitted to the examination.
    (d) special examinations, equivalent to final examinations, will be given for M401 and M402, and the student must complete the examinations corresponding to the courses for which credit is desired.
    (e) if the examination is passed, the corresponding credit will be recommended for transfer to the Director of Undergraduate Studies or may be purchased according to Indiana University's regulations.
