Regan Starr founded classpiano.com in February 2010 while a student at the Jacobs School of Music. His goal was to create a place where anyone could learn to play piano for free, allowing musical knowledge to be accessible to as many people as possible.
Visitors to the site teach themselves to play by following along with videos, as well as text and pictures. Lessons range from intermediate to advanced techniques and focus on popular music, with an emphasis on teaching chords and lead sheets. Classpiano.com is monetized through advertising, which allows Regan to keep the site free for users.
He is convinced that anyone can make a living doing what they love. “Strive to do something extraordinary,” he says, “something that adds value to other people’s lives.”
Today classpiano.com averages over 100,000 pageviews per day with users in over 200 countries. Regan plans to continue improving the site until it is the top piano site in the world. "It will take some time to get there," he says, "but it’s important to dream big."
Regan Starr graduated from the Jacobs School of Music in 2011 with a degree in Music Education.
