The backstage area at the MAC accommodates the production of eight operas, three ballets, and numerous concerts each year. The stage design
follows a European model in which the depths of the stage and audience area are about the same. Thus, the auditorium is shallow but tall.
Behind the main stage, as well as on either side, are wagon stages that can be traveled on or off stage. These wagons can be used to
facilitate shifting scenery between different acts of an opera, or to allow the current show to be set up on one area, while the other area
is available for setting up an upcoming opera or taking down a previous show. The rear wagon stage also contains a turntable that spins and
can accommodate two to three different sets for a particular opera. The area above the stage, known as the fly space, is 10 stories high
and is used to store backdrops and other flat scenery and hanging battens. This scenery can then be "flown" in and out for particular
scenes as needed.
