Diploma Programs

Diploma Requirements  ·  Course Load  ·  Recitals  ·  Artist Diploma auditions  ·  Artist Diploma committee

The Performer Diploma and Artist Diploma programs are intended for the outstanding performer. They are designed to concentrate study in appropriate repertoire. The diploma programs are administered by the Director of Graduate Studies, who monitors the progress of the students. No transfer of credit is accepted toward the requirements of any diploma program.  Diploma students are subject to all rules and regulations of the Jacobs School of Music.

Artist Diploma Requirements

Performer Diploma Requirements

Students must complete an Application for Graduation prior to, or at the beginning of, the intended last semester.  Diplomas are mailed about three months after graduation to the permanent address listed with the University Registrar. Transcripts requested about one month after graduation should reflect the completion of your diploma.

The Artist and Diploma program requirements must be completed within 5 years after beginning the diploma program. In addition, there is a limit of 4 semesters in which diploma students can register.

Course Load

Students in a diploma program are required to register full-time each semester of enrollment. In a fall or spring semester, full-time is at least 9 credit hours (including ensemble). In any summer session II in which a student chooses to register, full-time is 4 credit hours (including ensemble). These minimum semester enrollment requirements apply even in a student's final semester.

Recitals

For more information regarding recital guidelines and scheduling, review the Recital Scheduling homepage, or contact the Recital Scheduling Office (recsched AT indiana.edu or 812-855-6000).

Performer Diploma students are eligible for the Performer’s Certificate, which is awarded as a special recognition of musical understanding and technical proficiency demonstrated in recital. See here for more information.

Location
Recitals must take place in public spaces in Bloomington, announced to and open to the public.

Date
Recitals ordinarily take place during the fall or spring semesters according to deadlines specified in the scheduling policies. Recitals may take place during the second summer session if a hearing can be arranged and if faculty members are available to attend the recital.

Hearing
A pre-recital hearing is required for all performer diploma recitals. At the discretion of the faculty, other recitals may also be given a hearing. A hearing must be scheduled so that it can be completed and the recital performed within the published deadlines; it is the student's responsibility to arrange a hearing and to meet the deadlines. Students may perform a hearing in the summer with the approval of the department chair if faculty members are available. A hearing is valid for 60 days.

Repertory
Recital repertory is subject to approval by a student’s teacher or committee following any guidelines published by the department. Appropriate repertory for chamber music recitals is specified by departments. Recital repertory may not be repeated for degree or diploma credit.

Grading
The grade for a performer diploma recital is assigned by the teacher, who hears the recital in person. An organ recital grade is based on a recital hearing.

Artist Diploma recitals are attended and graded in person by the three members of a student’s AD committee. If a committee member (other than the student's teacher) is unable to attend, he or she and the student must arrange for a substitute from inside or outside the major department, as appropriate.

All recital grades are reported in writing to the director of graduate studies. A minimum grade of "A-" is required for Performer Diploma and Artist Diploma recitals.

Recording
Artist Diploma recitals must be recorded by the Department of Recording Arts for the Music Library when they take place in a Jacobs School of Music venue. A recording of equivalent quality must be provided to the Music Library by the student when an Artist Diploma recital is performed in a non-Music School venue.

Assisting performers
Recitals may include the participation of no more than 13 assisting performers and a conductor. All must be available for a hearing, if required. Participation by assisting performers must not interfere with their lessons, ensemble assignments or academic responsibilities. Chamber music credit is available to the assisting performers only if they have registered and arranged specifically for that credit. Special rules apply to conducting, composition, and jazz studies recitals that use Jacobs School of Music ensembles or specially-assembled groups; consult the appropriate department for information.

Length
Recitals have minimum and maximum lengths, which are displayed in the Jacobs School of Music Bulletin, and in the Recital Scheduling Office.

Artist Diploma program auditions

To be admitted to the Artist Diploma program, students must be at a performance level equivalent to acceptance into a major international competition. Candidates are admitted conditionally to the Artist Diploma program of the Jacobs School of Music through regular departmental audition procedures. For students new to the Jacobs School of Music, this departmental audition takes place during the regular audition times. For current Jacobs School of Music students, this departmental audition must take place in the semester before the one in which the student wishes to begin the program.

Students recommended by departmental audition must be heard in a School-wide audition by the Artist Diploma Committee of the Jacobs School of Music for final approval. For students new to the Jacobs School of Music, this audition must take place in the first semester of enrollment. For current Jacobs School of Music students, this audition must take place in the semester before the one in which the student wishes to begin the program.

Guidelines for the School-wide Audition

  1. The program must include at least 50 minutes of music (40 minutes for brass).
  2. The program must include at least three works.  Vocal programs must include music in at least three languages.
  3. The program must include music by at least three composers.
  4. If a concerto or major multi-movement work is presented, all movements must be prepared.
  5. Individual departments may require the program to be memorized and have other specific repertoire guidelines.
Admission to the Artist Diploma program does not require a high school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma, but one of these must be earned before the Artist Diploma can be granted.

Auditions are held in the fall and spring semesters; click here for upcoming dates and other deadlines.
