Applying for Graduation

To graduate, students must complete an Application for Graduation with the Music Graduate Office prior to, or at the beginning of, the intended last semester of enrollment. Please confirm that any "R" or "I" grades you may have on your record have been completed. If a recital was performed late in the semester during which you intend to graduate, please confirm that our office has received the recital grade.  You can submit your application for graduation on-line by using this form (unless you are in a MA or PHD program).

MA or PhD candidates must complete a University Graduate School application for graduation (available here (through OneStart), in the Music Graduate Office, or in Kirkwood Hall 111). For Graduate School "Application for Graduation" filing deadlines please contact that office at 855-9343.

The application for graduation is required for all students, regardless of whether you choose to attend the commencement ceremony.  There is no fee to apply to graduate.

To have your name appear in the Commencement Bulletin you must submit your application by the appropriate date listed here. Failure to submit your application by the stated deadline will prevent your name from being listed in the Bulletin.

*The names of August graduates will appear in the Commencement Bulletin for May if the application is submitted by the May graduation deadline. August graduates are invited to attend the May ceremony.

Reserving Caps and Gowns

For information on reserving caps and gowns, please see the graduation section of the IU Bookstore's web site at www.iubookstore.com, or visit the Graduation window on the mezzanine level of the IMU, open Monday-Friday from 9-5. If you have any further questions about cap and gown rental, please call the Bookstore at 855-6018 or 855-3016.

Commencement Ceremonies

Here are a few frequently asked questions about the commencement ceremony:

Do you get the actual diploma during the ceremony?

No.  Diplomas are mailed eight to ten weeks after the graduation date to your permanent address as listed in the Office of the Registrar's records.

Are individual students recognized by name during the ceremony?

All master's and diploma students are recognized as a group, though your name will be printed in the commencement bulletin if you apply for graduation by the deadlines posted here.  Doctoral students are recognized individually.

What type of cap and gown do diploma students wear?

Performer and Artist Diploma students wear the same cap and gown as Master's students in the commencement ceremony.

I am close to graduating and want to go through this semester's ceremony, but I'm not actually done with my degree/program.  Can I still participate in the graduation ceremony?

Yes.  Any student who has applied for graduation in a given semester may participate in the ceremony for that semester, even if they end up not actually graduating (finishing their program) that semester.
