Meeting Times: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 4:30 to 5:50 in Sweeney Hall
The International Vocal Ensemble (IVE) recreates vocal repertoire from outside the western art tradition by:
- meeting with natives and scholars of the culture to learn about the music,
- singing in the vocal and musical style of authentic models,
- singing in the native language from memory.
In this ensemble:
- we approximate the music appropriately and carefully that will be taught through the instructional strategies of other cultures (including aural, visual, and notated models),
- we discuss and explore a variety of healthy vocal styles,
- we honor each culture in learning their music as accurately as possibly with respect and appreciation,
- we explore the music and some aspects of the culture from which our repertoire is drawn, and the milieu in which the music is originally performed.
In the Fall 2009 semester, we will learn musical traditions from: Mexico, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, and Cuba, and perhaps a few more Latin American cultures! We will have special honored guests: Wolodymyr Smishkewych, Mike Spiro, Javier Leon, Colleen Haas, Gabriela Montoya-Steir, and Iris Rosa!
