Course Faculty

Faculty members from the Jacobs School of Music Organ Department garner worldwide recognition as outstanding teachers and performers but have a proven track record of teaching young organists of varying backgrounds in a supportive and encouraging manner. The faculty will be augmented by instructors on the harpsichord and carillon as well as Jacobs School of Music organ majors who will help as practice “mentors” throughout the week. Faculty will inspire not only in their teaching but in performances spread throughout the week.

Course Schedule

Students will receive private organ lessons a minimum of four days per week, and may also play for faculty instruction in other courses and masterclasses. Those interested in private or group harpsichord or carillon instruction should note this on the application. All attendees will participate in the Gala Closing Academy Recital on Friday, July 21 in Alumni Hall.

A typical daily schedule of activities will include the following:

  • Practice on one of the fourteen organs at the Jacobs School of Music

  • One applied lesson with organ faculty
  • Optional private or group harpsichord or carillon lessons

Classes on various topics, including:

  • Baroque Performance Practice
  • Romantic Performance Practice
  • Service Playing: Hymn playing, accompanying
  • Keyboard Skills and Organ Improvisation
  • Effective Practice Techniques
  • Building Your Repertoire: Baroque - Romantic - Contemporary
  • Building Your Repertoire: Music for the Church Service
  • Organ registration

Other highlights:

  • Mid-day and  evening recitals
  • A day of organ crawls, masterclasses and fun in Indianapolis
  • Friday in the Indiana Memorial Union's Alumni Hall, including the Gala Academy Recital, featuring performances by all course participants
  • Supervised recreational activities
