Third Grade

UNIT 1

Goals

  • Students will follow basic classroom instructions
  • Students will learn respect for and care of the violin
  • Students will learn preliminary violin set up
  • Students will sing and move together
  • Students will imitate simple rhythms
  • Students will sing and identify basic intervals
  • Students will play together and alone

Objectives

  • To continue reviewing the previous objectives (checking basic position, good bow hold)
  • To pluck GDG, DAD and AEA
  • To bow tiri tiri ti ti on open A and E, imitating the teacher in echo patterns
  • To bow single martele notes on A and E in the upper half of the bow
  • To practice silent string crossings on A and E at middle and tip.
  • To play AEA with the bow using upper half only
  • To pluck GDG, DAD and AEA and play AEA with the bow

UNIT 2

  • To recognize basic written units of rhythm (ta, ti ti, tiri tiri, ta-a, and ta-a-a-a) and be able to clap very simple patterns
  • To review 1st finger on D and A string - Bullseye
  • To sing and play Blues

UNIT 3

  • To read simple rhythmic flashcards in 4 beat patterns with 4 beats of rest between
    • Say and clap rhythm while feet are marching basic unit
    • To sing See a Little Monkey on A string

Chapter 20:  Singing See a Little Monkey

  • To play See a Little Monkey with stops between the notes

Chapter 21:  Playing See a Little Monkey with stops between the notes to set the fingers.

  • To play See a Little Monkey with no stops

Chapter 22:  Playing See a Little Monkey. Performance.

    • To play open E to 3rd finger D on the A string, first with stops, then without on tiri tiri ti ti

Chapter 23:  Broken Record from E to D. Students play in upper half of the bow with tiri tiri ti ti rhythm open E to 3 on A, first setting each finger (EEEE E E, set 123, 3333 3 3, lift all 3), then plopping all three fingers at once. Take time to set the fingers correctly at first, and then as students progress, they can do it with no break.

Chapter 24:  A Major Scale – first with stops between each finger, then with no stops.
