The changing face of the Jacobs Alumni Association

The phenomenon of Internet social networking and Facebook, in particular, has completely reinvented communication patterns among alumni organizations. When it comes to alumni magazines and Web sites across the globe, nothing less than a communications revolution is taking place.

In a 2008 article, the New York Times commented:

“The advent of social networking on the Internet has created a quandary for these magazines, which want to maintain a conversation with alumni but have been slow to embrace the Web…But younger alumni, accustomed to second-by-second updates from friends and classmates, are exchanging information in real time on Facebook and MySpace. Why wait for your alma mater to churn out a quarterly journal when you can Twitter all day?”

The Facebook project is just one of many Jacobs School projects planned that embraces the immense power of social networking on the Web. Check us out and participate alongside the many hundreds who have already signed up!
If you don’t yet have a Facebook account, you can still see what we’re up to by searching for “IU Jacobs School of Music Alumni Facebook” on Google or your favorite search engine.

A New Calendar

CalendarIn addition to the Facebook groups and pages, we’re launching
an online calendar that will include Jacobs alumni events around
the U.S.A. and beyond. Please check this out as well and let
us know of any events you’d like to have us include. The
calendar also exists on the JSoM alumni Web page music.indiana.edu/alumni and can be exported to your
mobile device!

To submit an event, please send a note with location, time, short description, and Web link to: musalum@indiana.edu.

Other pages to look for are derived from IU Jacobs School of Music Alumni. For instance, there is a group for the NYC region and a Jacobs School of Music group for South Korea. Let us know where you think we need to virtually visit for more ways to be in touch! •
